Supervisory Roles

Team leaders or supervisors in the Domiciliary (home care) sector coordinate domiciliary carers who work in the community.

Role overview:

  • Supervising managing and supporting workers so they can perform their roles safely and to the best of their ability.
  • Supporting the organisation’s manager to run the workplace according to standards and legislation.
  • Acting as a positive role model to colleagues.
  • Developing care plans that outline what care and support individuals need.
  • Leading team meetings and doing inductions, supervisions and appraisals.
  • Working in partnership with other professionals to ensure individuals get the support they need.

Skills and experience:

  • Supervisory and team leading skills.
  • The ability to deal with conflict.
  • Good English skills to understand and apply policies and procedures in practice.


Employee induction will include necessary training such as health and safety, first aid and moving and handling. Additional specific training such as autism awareness, communication skills or working with people with dementia may be offered.
It might be useful to have experience working in a similar role or with vulnerable adults. You can gain this experience through a work placement, from your personal life, through volunteering or as part of a traineeship or apprenticeship. 


Desirable qualifications:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care: This qualification will support learners to develop skills and knowledge needed to provide frontline care for vulnerable adults within their own homes, day care centres, residential and nursing homes and other healthcare settings. This course is appropriate if you wish to progress into senior/leadership care roles.
  • Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care - This course will continue learners to develop their skill set, this qualification is appropriate if you wish to progress into senior/leadership care roles.

Opportunities:
While in post you could do a vocational qualification such as a Diploma in Health and Social Care or continuing professional development qualifications such as an award or certificate in activity provision.

Your employer may pay for you to complete these qualifications (via the Workforce Development Fund), or you could apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to pay for them yourself.
As a team leader or supervisor, you would be gaining crucial leadership skills that would prepare you to progress into deputy or team manager positions. It is recommended that you have fully completed the Level 2 or Level 3 qualification in Adult Social Care/Health and Social Care, or Apprenticeship Standards before progressing into management roles.
